Who We Are

Camp Haven, established in 2023, is a groundbreaking initiative that addresses the urgent demand for a nurturing and empowering space for LGBTQ+ youth in Texas. Committed to fostering inclusivity and support, our camp is distinguished by its innovative approach, seamlessly blending traditional camping activities with peer-supported group therapy sessions led by licensed counselors.

At Camp Haven, we believe in going beyond the conventional camping experience. Our dedicated team of volunteers is not only passionate about creating a safe haven for young individuals to embrace their true selves, form enduring friendships, and acquire essential life skills but also recognizes the significance of mental and emotional well-being.

What sets Camp Haven apart is the integration of peer-supported group therapy sessions facilitated by licensed counselors. This unique combination provides campers with a holistic environment where they can explore nature, partake in traditional camp activities, and engage in therapeutic discussions with peers and professionals. This dual approach aims to create a comprehensive and transformative experience, promoting personal growth, resilience, and a sense of community.

Join us at Camp Haven, where the beauty of nature meets the strength of community, offering LGBTQ+ youth in Texas a one-of-a-kind opportunity to thrive both personally and emotionally.

Why come to Camp Haven?

LGBTQ+ youth in Texas face unique challenges, including higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide compared to their heterosexual counterparts. Discrimination, rejection, and harassment can contribute to a lack of self-esteem and feelings of isolation. These difficulties are even more pronounced in rural areas or communities lacking LGBTQ+ resources. Camp Haven was formed in 2023 to address these issues head-on, providing a lifeline of support and a chance for LGBTQ+ youth to thrive.

Camp Counseling

  • Our groups will include a mix of support, exploration, and education all with the focus of healing and empowering.

  • The therapeutic groups at camp will include up to 8 campers, 2 adult cabin buddies who are with them throughout the week, and a trained masters level counselor.

  • Group topics will include: exploring identity verbiage, opportunities to share about their coming out story, identifying ways they feel hurt and supported within their home and school environments, and opportunities to celebrate themselves for who they are.

  • In addition to daily talk therapy groups, Camp Haven staff and volunteers will also include the following activities which may have a helping component such as: arts and crafts, daily affirmations, nature based reflection, and more. Although Camp Haven has structured therapy sessions, connection and understanding happens informally at camp as well. It is not a surprise when campers strike up their own conversations outside of group such as over a meal or when hiking. This sense of safety and community is the cornerstone of Camp Haven's mission.
